DOE Selects GTI to Perform Hydrogen Storage Research

Fuel Cells Today, May 11, 2004

The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) recently announced it has been selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) to perform nearly $2.5 million of research into hydrogen storage technologies, with the organization to serve as the prime contractor on two projects awarded funding under President Bush's $1.2-billion initiative for research development and demonstration projects to establish a hydrogen economy, as well as a research partner on a third project.

"These research contracts present an opportunity for GTI to provide long-term solutions for hydrogen storage and hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles," said GTI Hydrogen Energy Systems Center executive director Gerry Runte. "The development of hydrogen storage, infrastructure and production technologies are key lines of business for GTI."

GTI said it will team with Superior Graphite Company to develop a modified graphite/metal complex "that could increase solid-state hydrogen storage capacity." In another project, GTI will team with NexGen Fueling to evaluate storage methods for liquid hydrogen, while the organization will also serve as a research partner to TIAX, LLC on a materials advisory group to analyze hydrogen storage materials and vehicular on-board storage systems.
