DOE Awards Hydrogen Research Grants to Ohio Institutions

Fuel Cells Today, Oct 18, 2004

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced it has awarded more than $5 million to Ohio companies and universities to help fund hydrogen research projects.

According to DOE, the funding includes $2.9 million to Midwest Optoelectronics, LLC for the development of solar electrochemicals technologies, $1.1 million to the Ohio State University Research Foundation for the development of a low-cost catalyst to help convert ethanol into hydrogen when using reforming processes and $1.9 million to the University of Cincinnati for the development of a technology to reduce the steps currently used during hydrogen reforming processes.

"These projects...highlight the emphasis that the department has placed on renewable production of hydrogen," said DOE secretary Spencer Abraham. "They will move the nation toward advanced technologies that use renewable energy sources to make and deliver safe, affordable hydrogen for fuel cell powered vehicles."
