New Hydrogen Transportation Project Unveiled in New Haven, CT

Fuel Cells Today, Sept 23, 2005

Greater New Haven Transit District (GNHTD) executive director Donna Carter recently awarded the district's Advanced Transportation System Development Program to an integrated product development (IPD) team led by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI). The project is part of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA)-administered National Hydrogen Initiative.

"This concept is a complete Advanced Transportation System 'solutions package' for hydrogen-powered transit operations unlike any undertaken previously," said Carter. "The GNHTD, the FTA and Connecticut Congressional Delegation have long had a vision for bringing a new approach to transit to life. Such a concept has never been explored in this manner until now, and we are excited to see it finally under way."

The award is for Phase I of the projected multi-year program, which aims to simultaneously design and deliver two hydrogen-fueled hybrid electric transit vehicles and two on-site hydrogen production, storage and dispensing systems, as well as design and implement "innovative" diagnostic, maintenance and training platforms for the vehicles and fueling systems.

The project team includes GTI as the lead project integrator and hydrogen reformation system developer, Mobile Energy Solutions, LLC (with Sabre Engineering, Inc. and CompositeTek) as the vehicle developer/builder, Hydrogenics Corporation as the fuel cell supplier, Avalence, LLC as the electrolytic hydrogen system developer and renewable power supply installer, and Innovation Drive, Inc. as the manager of marketing and public awareness for the project, as well as team coordinator.
