THE Army's military occupational specialties are divided into broad categories that include the enlisted career-management fields, warrant officer career branches and officer career branches, plus officer and medical functional areas. As the Army's transformation continues, career categories evolve and new career specialties emerge.
Administrative Services
Specialties include clerical and supervisory activities in personnel, administration, finance, accounting and information services, These include:
* Records administration
* Religious-support specialists
* Personnel and recruiting
* Legal services and reporting
Combat Operations
Specialties in offensive- and defensive-combat activities also include reconnaissance and security. Most of these MOSs are closed to women. Major fields include:
* Infantry
* Combat engineering
* Field artillery
* Air-defense artillery
* Special forces
* Armor
* Combat aviation
* Tactical-center operations
Electronic Maintenance
These specialties involve electronics-maintenance and repair support for Army equipment and systems:
* Intelligence- and communications-systems maintenance
* Weapons-systems specialists
* Medical-equipment specialists
* Avionics maintenance
* Network-systems maintenance
Construction Engineering
Specialties involve technical development, building and road construction, and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Specialties include:
* General and topographic engineering
* Electricians and plumbers
* Heavy-equipment operators
* Underwater salvage and repair
Engineering, Science and Technical
Specialties requiring science and technical training include equipment operations and maintenance, laboratory testing and data interpretation. Specialties include:
* Computer-systems specialists
* Satellite-communications operations and maintenance
* Surveying and mapping Explosive-ordnance disposal
* Meteorological specialists
* Unmanned-vehicle operations and maintenance
* Power generation
Health Care
Specialties in the medical and dental fields cover a variety of responsibilities, from point-of-injury to clinical settings. Specialties include:
* Surgical nursing and patient care
* Patient administration
* Laboratory specialties
* Pharmacy and medical supply
* Optical care
* Food inspection
* Animal care
Intelligence and Electronic Communications
Specialties involve participation in psychological operations, electronic warfare, and the collection and analysis of military intelligence. These include:
* Signal operations
* Physical and signal security
* Data analysis
* Interpreters and translators
Mechanical Maintenance Specialties involve the maintenance and recovery of equipment, vehicles, weapon systems and aircraft. These include:
* Metal workers and machinists
* Weapon repair
* Vehicle and systems repair
* Heating and cooling mechanics
Media, Public and Civil Affairs
Specialties involving the conduct of civil affairs, and the communication of the Army's message to military and civilian audiences:
* Broadcast and print reporters
* Civil affairs (reserve component)
* Public affairs
* Musicians
Transportation and Supply
Specialties include the coordination and supervision of personnel, equipment and procedures for the proper transportation and use of Army materials throughout the world:
* Flight operations
* Boat operations
* Petroleum and water supply
* Shipping and transportation
* Supply and services
Protective Services
Specialties involve security support to the Army community in peace and war:
* Emergency management
* Firefighters
* Law enforcement and security
