Apollo, May, 2004 by Samson Spanier
Tony Law, our associate publisher and director of advertising, is celebrating his 500th edition of the magazine. He joined APOLLO in August 1962 to develop its international advertising, at the invitation of Lord Gibson, chairman of The Financial Times, which had shortly before acquired the magazine.
Tony (left) worked with his father, Victor, who had been poached as general manager and advertisement director from APOLLO's bitter rival, the now-defunct Connoisseur. In 1974, Tony took over his father's job--although Victor continued working for APOLLO part time until his death at the age of 83 in 1992. Since then, Tony has seen four changes of editor and four changes of ownership, and witnessed advertisers come and go with every fluctuation of the art market's fortunes--with two notable exceptions, carpet dealers C. John and the Bond Street jewellers S.J. Phillips, still advertising after 42 years.
