The sixteenth-century bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been restored, following its destruction in 1993 during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia. Stari Most (Old Bridge) was built in 1566, under Suleyman the Magnificent at the height of the Ottoman empire. The World Monuments Fund and the Age Kahn Trust announced the completion of restoration this summer, as well as the establishment of a new agency to oversee cultural heritage in the city.
The project, which was funded by $3.5 million from the WMF and the AGT as well as $2.5m from the World Bank, also involved training Bosnian architects to maintain the bridge.
