Sun may have to drop Project Janus

Rethink IT, Dec, 2004

Sun Microsystems may be forced to drop Project Janus from the initial release of Solaris 10 due to compatibility problems with Linux.

Project Janus allows normal, unmodified Linux binaries to run on the Solaris operating system. This is a technically complex feature because many Linux binaries are dependent on a specific Linux implementation. Sun's plan was to target Red Hat applications in the first release of Janus and then expand to cover applications for other Linux flavors.

According to Glenn Weinberg, vice president of Sun's operating platforms group, Janus development has been slow, and it will probably not make the initial release of Solaris 10 but will be rolled into the first Solaris 10 update offered early next year.

The delay of Project Janus could give some enterprises reason to hold off on implementing Solaris 10. Many organizations running both Linux and Solaris consider Project Janus long overdue.
