IBM to offer utilities for non-IBM platforms

Rethink IT, May, 2004

IBM's Personal Computing division is to offer some of the company's ThinkVantage systems management utilities for non-IBM platforms for the first time.

The Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore tool, and the IBM System Migration Assistant, will be available for non-IBM PCs in April.

IBM has treated the ThinkVantage range, which automates many PC management tasks, as a marketing device to improve the appeal of its PCs against rivals from Dell and Hewlett-Packard. It bundles the whole suite on many ThinkPad and other PCs for free in order to attract enterprises looking for simpler management and lower cost of ownership for large populations of PCs and laptops.

However, IBM admits that few companies have IBM-only environments and would like to have the same facilities on all their PCs.
