Corel to release Linux WordPerfect

Rethink IT, May, 2004

Corel has released a 'proof of concept' Linux version of its Wordperfect application this month to test the demand for a non-Windows office suite. This comes as Sun's own commitment to its Java/Linux-based desktop strategy comes into doubt after its settlement and technical collaboration pact with Microsoft.

Corel said the native Linux product was available in its online store from April 15 to "determine the feasibility of developing future Linux versions of WordPerfect or WordPerfect Office".

In 1998, Corel previously produced a Linux native version of WordPerfect 8, and in 2000 added a Linux-translated version of WordPerfect 9, but since then, has backed away from its Linux strategy to focus on graphics software, following a $135m bailout from Microsoft. It also went private last year following a $98m buy by a San Francisco venture capital firm.

On the Linux side, WordPerfect will compete with Sun's StarOffice and its open source offshoot, OpenOffice.org
