Open source backers call for Oasis boycott

Rethink IT, April, 2005

A group of leading open source advocates are urging a boycott against OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), which earlier last month announced a policy revision that doesn't require standards to be royalty-free.

The advocates include Mitchell Kapor, Lawrence Lessig, Tim O'Reilly, Bruce Perens, Eric Raymond, Lawrence Rosen, Doc Searls and Richard Stallman. Meanwhile, OASIS leaders say it's just a misunderstanding, and that excluding royalty patents merely on principle will foolishly keep good technology out of the hands of users, or even keep some users away entirely.
