Operators resist roaming charge changes

Rethink IT, July, 2006

As expected, European mobile operators are seeking to preempt new rules on roaming charges, threatened by the European Commission, with changes of their own. Following promises of charge cuts from individual players, a group of cellcos have now banded together to halve the price of average wholesale roaming tariffs.

T-Mobile, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telenor, TeliaSonera and Wind have agreed to cap the average wholesale rates they offer each other for providing roaming services at 45 eurocents per minute from October 2006 and 36 cents per minute from October 2007.
