Fans of Pratchett's Discworld fantasy/SF series will not be disappointed in this story that takes Vimes from his present-day life to an alternate life as his younger self. The appearance of werewolves, vampires, zombies and witches is nothing new in these strange worlds. Sam Vimes' main antagonist Carce is bent on killing him and manages to slip through the time warp with him, creating even more danger and havoc. This story stands well by itself. While some of the characters don't have as much development, it doesn't take long to understand them in the sweep of this wacky, surreal adventure.
Briggs reads with the deft vocals of someone who totally understands his characters. As Sam Vimes, Commander of Ankh-Morpork's City Watch. Briggs allows his voice to have a dry, clipped quality. He also jumps from female to male with ease and his vocal range gives the impression of a cast of actors. For Pratchett fans old and new (Note: See additional review for this title above.) Sally M.
