NEW SPRING, THE NOVEL. (Prequel to the Wheel of Time series). Robert Jordan. 2004. Read by Kate Reading & Michael Kramer. 8 tapes. 13 hrs. Audio Renaissance. 1-55927-952-4. $34.95. Cardboard, plastic; plot notes. SA
Moiraine Damodred and Lan Mandragoran could not be more different. The winding paths of the sorceress and soldier cross, however, and merge in an effort to fight evil forces trying to kill the hidden Dragon Reborn, the man prophesized to bring peace to a war-torn world. Reading and Kramer are perfect vocal counterparts to the main characters. Reading invites readers into the politics and mystery of the world of Aes Sedai. She gives Moiraine's quirks full attention and makes the most minor of characters distinct.
Kramer sounds as battle-worn as Lan Mandragoran is described to be. Effective at making Lan no-nonsense, weary, and observant, Kramer adds further life to the character beyond his military prowess. Fans will not be disappointed, although the first few chapters may be hard for novice listeners since a great deal of history is glossed over before the story settles into a tale of fantasy and intrigue.
