STEINBERG, Sally Levitt. The donut book; the whole story in words, pictures & outrageous tales. Storey Publishing. 184p. illus. index. c2004. 1-58017-548-1. $14.95. JSA

This is a fascinating book! Sally Levitt Steinberg's grandfather invented the donut-making machine in 1920. It took 12 tries to get a machine that produced donuts properly, and it cost $15,000--which was a fortune in those days. He went on to manufacture and sell donut machines all over the country. The donut went on to become a staple of American society. Details abound in this story covering the history of donuts, while 29 recipes provide a way to achieve the ultimate sugar rush, from New Orleans Beignets to Portuguese Malasadas. In addition to the history and recipes, a Donut Lovers Guide is also provided to locate bakeries that serve the lightest, fluffiest, and tastiest donuts throughout the US and other countries. This book is a delightful romp. Shirley Reis, IMC Dir., Lake Shore MS, Mequon, WI
