Cann, Kate. Grecian holiday; or, how I turned down the best possible thing only to have the time of my life - Book Review

Kliatt, Sept, 2002 by Sarah Applegate

HarperCollins, Avon. 346p. c1999.0-06-447302-3. $5.99. SA

After recently reading her Love trilogy (Ready!, Sex and Go!, reviewed in KLIATT July 2001), a huge favorite in my high school library, Kate Cann is my new ab-fab British author. Many girls connect to her realistic stories of love, sexuality, friendship, family and adolescence. Grecian Holiday continues this tradition with the story of Kelly, who turns down her boyfriend's invitation to go on a road trip with him and his mates in order to go to a beautiful villa in Greece with two girls. The trip turns out to be just what she needed. Kelly is amazed both by her friend Jade's unabashed sexuality and by Sarah's total fearfulness. Traveling with these two teaches her a lot about what she needs in order to grow up.

This light read about gaining independence and getting a suntan at the same time will hook many female readers who are seeking a quality escapist story to get lost in. The sexual situations here are handled with maturity and authenticity, and the book is suitable for high school readers. Sarah Applegate, Libn., River Ridge H.S., Lacey, WA
