When Dutch families board the ship Batavia on their way to a new life in Australia, they are unprepared for the difficulties of the voyage or the perils of shipwreck. Young Judith Bastiaansz, oldest daughter of a large family headed by a minister, is attracted to one of the officers of the ship. Later, when the passengers and officers are struggling to survive on desert islands, she is shocked when she realizes the nature of people under stress and realizes the true character of her "betrothed."
The novel will remind the reader of Lord of the Flies in spite of its much earlier setting (in the 17th century) and the age of its characters. Halligan's genteel voice conveys Judith's innocence, love and conflict as the character slowly evolves into a person who carries knowledge no human should have.
