Although the focus here is on Hamilton, a great patriot with a little tarnish, the early history of the fledgling republic and the parallel activities of Aaron Burr are never far from the spotlight. Hamilton, born in St. Croix in 1757, moved to New York, where by the age of 19 he was an orator, author, and political activist. Four years later, he was a trusted advisor to General Washington in the Revolutionary War and assumed responsibilities usually reserved for men twice his age. In the postwar years, he was regarded as "the architect of the Constitution" and continued to be a major force in the workings of the young democracy as Secretary of the Treasury. He feuded with Jefferson and Madison over the need for a strong central government. Other political conflicts arose, culminating in the duel with Aaron Burr.

Brick provides an unvoiced, low-key, unobtrusive narration that stimulates the imagination. Depending on the content, he could easily pass for a TV commentator, a college professor, or a storyteller. The length may daunt some listeners, but those who are seriously interested in Hamilton's life and his influence on the history of the republic will find it fascinating. A boon for history enthusiasts who prefer listening to books.
