ETLING, Kathy. Cougar attacks; encounters of the worst kind. Lyons Press. 246p. bibliog. index. c2001. 1-59228-206-2. $14.95. JSA
Cougars have lived in North America since before Europeans and maybe humans, but they have been chased out of many of their old territories. Cougars are fighting back and are returning to their old haunts. This has caused conflict and sometimes attacks on humans by cougars and on cougars by humans. People have conflicting opinions about the animals called cougars, mountain lions, pumas or panthers. Some hate them, some worship and protect them and a few are "just curious," but everyone seems fascinated by them. While the bulk of this book is a description of all the attacks of cougars on humans, there is also an interesting foreword and introduction, an excellent chapter on the biology of the cougar, and another called "Whither the Cougar."
