FAT GIRL: A TRUE STORY. Judith Moore. 2005. Read by Carol Monda. 4 tapes. 5.75 hrs. Recorded Books. 1-4193-3343-7. $39.75. Vinyl; content notes. SA

This is an uncompromisingly honest portrayal of a physically and emotionally abusive childhood and all its ramifications. Obesity seems the least of them. Moore internalized the many violations she faced to the point of seemingly incurable self-loathing. There is no resolution, no coming-to-terms or acceptance. Moore says she does not want the reader's pity. But it is impossible not to feel compassion. One can only hope she can accept honest praise for her bravery, her stark, effective prose, her humor and wit.

This is an excellent production for YAs, one sure to spark lively discussion about the cruelty of bullying and the pressure many feel to meet idealized standards of beauty. Monda narrates with the force and intensity the prose deserves. Nancy Chaplin, Libn., VCCW, Goochland, VA
