Journalist Bona Parish has decided to write a newspaper series relating the history of local family-owned businesses, and Tarlton Jewelers seems to be the best place to start. A chance encounter with old friend Kate Tarlton brings Bona into family matters that seem beyond her sleuthing abilities. Kate wants her to search out the cause of horrifying nightmares that are plaguing Kate's daughter Freya. Bona isn't sure she wants to become this involved with the Tarlton family skeletons at a time when there are major problems with relationships within her own family. Fraser captures the complexities of family relationships with as much skill as she employed in her other novels to create a plot concerning a fascinating, long-unsolved disappearance/murder. Tong's excellent reading creates completely individual voices and personalities for each of the numerous characters. While her slight British accent establishes setting and ambience, she switches to American English for the brief appearance at the Parish home during the Christmas holidays of a visitor from the US.
