A legend in retirement

Coast Guard Magazine, March, 2005 by Nathaniel Robinson

A Coast Guard Douglas RD-4 airplane, circa 1938, rests on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Fla. Once the main type of rescue plane used by the Coast Guard, the RD-4 helped three Coast Guard aviators earn the first Distinguished Flying Crosses. This particular plane is the only one of its kind on display. It was transported to the museum thanks to a donation from the Ancient Order of Pterodactyls, the Coast Guard's unofficial aviation association.
