The universal nature of leadership - Publisher's letter

Latino Leaders: The National Magazine of the Successful American Latino, Feb-March, 2003 by Jorge Ferraez, Raul Ferraez

One of the best things about the beginning of a new year is that it encourages us to reflect on how to become better human beings. February is a perfect time for taking on new roles and challenges, because there is still time to hold on to our New Year's resolutions.

Many of our readers are fascinated with leadership, a universal virtue that has changed the face of the planet and the course of its history. Leadership is often accompanied by transcendence, which explains why so many of us are fascinated with the art of good leadership.

We urge our readers to reflect on their own leadership qualities and to ask themselves 'What kind of leadership can I provide?' Any kind of leadership is better than just sitting around and contemplating the leadership of others.

A good way of starting is to ask yourself what your cause will be. Everybody needs a cause in life, other than making money and succeeding in daily life. Many would say, 'Well, managing to succeed professionally and in my personal life is good enough.' Yes, that's true, but this is for the rank and file. Leaders will go further; they will succeed in their own lives mad simultaneously make other lives succeed--the lives of others, an organization, a social project, a community cause. This is how to transcend, by leaving your work in others.

So, after accomplishing something in life, you find yourself with time and energy to devote to others. Find a cause that will motivate you to work, to be creative and productive. Create your own foundation, or join a good cause.

No one will remember you if you die with $1 million in your bank account, but maybe a single person who has benefited from your work will remember you forever, and people who remember you will make you live forever.

We sincerely hope our interviews can help you to find your own leadership.
