Sonia Nazario

Latino Leaders: The National Magazine of the Successful American Latino, June-July, 2006 by Lupe Martinez-Romero

I noticed that in your APR/MAY issue, you gave only two pages of space to Pulitzer Prize winner Sonia Nazario, but gave a flashy four-page article to a cattleman from El Paso.

What is wrong with you? Sonia Nazario is what can be considered a true leader. As a journalist and writer, she took great risks to write a heartbreaking story about a real problem that was so poignant that it won her one of this country's most prestigious awards, yet you relegate her to a secondary article to give so much more space to a Hollywood-looking, but clearly less important, Hispanic male?

As a magazine that "promotes leadership in the Latino community" you have awarded yourselves the responsibility to ensure that you stay true to that statement, but do so across the board. Leadership is not a patrimony of men, and I am sure that you are well aware of that.

You owe Ms. Nazario an apology, and also to all of your women readers, who I'm sure you agree deserve much better than that.

Thank you,

Lupe Martinez-Romero

Editor's Comment:

We understand and value your opinion Lupe, and we are pleased to inform you that we just recently published an entire special edition on female leadership in our community. We agree that there are plenty of examples to draw from, and we hope that you agree that our special women's issue will successfully introduce many of them to our readers. Look for it in the mail, or at a store near you.
