Latina role models get recognition

Latino Leaders: The National Magazine of the Successful American Latino, June-July, 2006

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, and the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, which sponsors Madre y Mujer, joined forces at L.A. City Hall recently to honor two distinguished Latina role models. The honorees were U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, the first Mexican-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, and Dr. Isabel Gomez-Bassols, the nation's foremost Hispanic radio psychologist, and national spokesperson of Madre y Mujer.

Rep. Roybal-Allard became the first recipient of the newly instituted Madre y Mujer Annual Award. This award was established by Kimberly-Clark to recognize outstanding Hispanic women who have demonstrated equal success in both their public and family lives. Dr. Gomez-Bassols, better known to her legion of fans around the country as La Doctora Isabel, el Angel de la Radio" (Dr. Isabel, the Angel of the Airwaves), was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles.

"Kimberly-Clark is extremely happy to confer the First Annual Madre y Mujer Award on Congresswoman Roybal-Allard, an outstanding Latina whose exemplary lifetime of service to family, community, state and nation personifies what this award is all about," said Laura Keely, Director, Promotion Services, Kimberly-Clark.
