NAA honors Latino: philanthropists in Puerto Rico

Latino Leaders: The National Magazine of the Successful American Latino, August-Sept, 2004

On June 23, 2004, the New America Alliance (NAA) held its 3rd Philanthropy Awards Dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The celebration was part of the NAA's Spring Conference held there. Los Tigres del Norte, the popular Norteno band, was among the honored for their extensive work towards the advancement of Latinos and the improvement of the quality of life in the American Latino community.

The H. Frank Dominguez Philanthropists Of the Year Award was given to the group, adding to their extensive list of achievements. The award was named after H. Frank Dominguez, founder of the Vanir Group of Companies, Inc., who was a founding member of the NAA and who advocated philanthropy and American Latino power.

The Philanthropist in Civic Participation Award was presented to Alex Morales, President and Chief Executive Officer of Children's Bureau of Southern California, a non-profit organization. Marjorie Torres and Diego Recalde both received the Philanthropist in Human Capital Award Torres is the founder and CEO of Concrete Stories, a commercial real estate consulting firm that helps tenants to find reduced cost office space and to budget their costs, and Recalde is the company's Chief Financial Officer.

NAA programs focus on increasing the access to capital markets and financing for Latino businesses, and on promoting the participation of and influence of American Latinos on this nation's corporate boards, as well as expanding the participation and influence of American Latinos in Federal and state financial institutions and investing in the higher education of American Latinos in the fields of business and finance.
