Sculptra for treatment of acne scars and varicella scars

Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, March, 2006 by Marissa Heller

Dermik Laboratories' Sculptra (injectable poly-L-lactic acid), which has FDA approval for correction of facial lipoatrophy in individuals with HIV, will be evaluated in a clinical study for its ability to treat acne and varicella (chicken pox) scars. Dr. Kenneth Beer, a Florida-based dermatologist, recently announced that he will perform a clinical trial in his practice to examine the role of Sculptra in the treatment of these common problems.

He plans to enroll 20 patients between the ages of 18 and 65 for the study. These patients will have their acne or varicella scars injected with Sculptra monthly for a period of 6 months. The efficacy of Sculptra for this novel indication will then be evaluated.
