Three new guides to understanding literature are picks for middle to high school grades equally. Clarice Swisher's Understanding The Canterbury Tales (156006-7829, $27.45) and Thomas Streissguth's Understanding Beowulf (1560068612, $27.45) both belong to the expanding 'understanding great literature' series by Thomson/Gale: each hold a little over a hundred pages of information, from a brief biographical sketch of the author and his times to a historical background and overview of the work itself, including surveys of major themes and characters. Both lend to reserch papers.
