Marian Anderson loved to sing: by the mid-1930s she was famous throughout Europe, had been welcomed at the White House, and yet was denied the opportunity to sing in Washington's finest auditorium because of her race. Her response to this affront led to an involvement in civil rights which made her an inspiration for all black artists. Anderson's writings and other first-person accounts contributes to Russell Freedman's The Voice That Challenged A Nation (0618159762 $18.00), a biography illustrated with modern photos: a recommended pick for grades 4-7. Judith Bloom Fradin and Dennis Brindell Fradin's biography Power Of One (061831-556X, $19.00) provides 178 pages of facts about Daisy Bates and the Little Rock Nine who bravely entered a formerly segregated high school to test new civil rights liberties. Daisy's stirring story comes to life in a biography which relies on archival material and interviews with Bates' relatives and other members of the Little Rock Nine.
