Three fine wild animal guides are recommended additions to general library holdings. Robert H. Busch's The Grizzly Almanac: A Fully Illustrated Natural And Cultural History Of America's Great Bear (1592283209, $19.95) provides a lively history of the grizzly's interactions with mankind, from its place in myth and legends to real encounters and descriptions of grizzly attacks. The color photos are outstanding--and surprising, in a paperback. Robert H. Busch also provides a similar coverage in The Cougar Almanac: A Complete Natural History Of The Mountain Lion (1592282954, $14.95), a survey of one of the most misunderstood big cats of modern times. Also known as pumas, mountain lions, or panthers, cougars are one of North America's last big predators, and one of the most elusive. For a narrowed focus on their dangers alone, obtain Kathy Etling's Cougar Attacks: Encounters Of The Worst Kind (159228-2962, $14.95): cougar history is also offered here, with a focus on gripping details of terrifying encounters. Despite its sensationalist title, Etling strives for fairness in separating myths from reality, in the process imparting a great deal of natural history details on the cougar's habits and habitat.
