Hall (tourism, U. of Otago, New Zealand) and Harkonen (research and business development, Helsinki Business Polytechnic, Finland) assemble 13 essays by scholars and researchers in tourism, economics, lakes and fisheries, and other fields in Europe, the US, and New Zealand who discuss the relationship between lakes and tourism, a topic usually ignored in favor of oceans. They focus on lakes in the developing world, their historical dimensions and cultural values in examples of Crater Lake, Oregon, Savonlinna, and New Zealand; tourist activities and perceptions in the Netherlands, Poland, and Finland; planning and management issues, including marketing and developing, and global concerns; and environmental issues. The book originated with the Lake Tourism Project developed within the Finnish University Network of Tourism Studies. It is aimed at tourism students and those involved in lake management.
