In this study, Arima (Keisen U., Tokyo) explores the theme of existential isolation in selected short stories by Kate Chopin, Katherine Anne Porter, and Eudora Welty. Following the introduction, five chapters look at the isolation experienced by the stories' characters as a result of such situational causes as unrequited passion, feminine independence, and death. The text is based upon Arima's dissertation.
