Growing up as an everyday teen is tough enough, but lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) high school students face significant isolation, discrimination and emotional or physical violence. As a result many are working to develop gay-straight alliances (GSAs), school clubs in which they and others can communicate and receive mutual support. He explains the characteristics of a GSA and corrects misperceptions, gives students a checklist for starting and maintaining a GSA club, gives teaches and counselors support in working with LGBT students in general and with those who form GSAs, gives administrators the information they will inevitably need about legal and public relations issues, and explains to parents how to support their LGBT and straight children as they form GSAs.
