This guide from the World Bank is a supplemental overview to the accompanying sourcebook presented on CD-ROM, which discusses how to improve the lives of those in urban slums. It contains 14 audiovisual presentations and 12 video interviews. Sections consider adaptive and proactive approaches, and feature six profiles of places such as Ecuador and Kabul. Interviews--with urban stakeholders, those in government and nongovernment organizations, academia, and others--are on themes such as working with slum dwellers, planning, land, and policies. Information is based on data accumulated over 35 years from different sources. The sourcebook does not exist in printed format. It is intended for practitioners, policy makers, students, and academics. Two versions of the CD are included--one a PowerPoint and the other a Flash version of the sourcebook.
