Macpherson reports the results of an ethnographic study she conducted of women engaged in Reiki, a spiritual healing practice rediscovered in Japan during the 1920s. Her topics include the New Age and healing in it, energetic bodies, writing Reiki history, and doing Reiki. The book is an outgrowth of her Ph.D. dissertation in religious studies at the University of Stirling, Scotland. There is no subject index.
