Ten education and development specialists from the World Bank and the countries of Singapore, Korea, Vietnam, and Ireland contribute to a report stemming from a 2006 study tour to Singapore and Vietnam organized by the World Bank for senior education officials from six African nations. The text and study tour program provide a comparative analysis of choices and implementation strategies employed by a selection of countries to develop their education and economic systems, over 30 to 40 years, from a situation similar to that of many Sub-Saharan African countries. The text features case studies of four East Asian countries--Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam--and Ireland--included for its resemblance to recent development experiences in East Asian countries--and relates these cases to the educational challenges faced by African countries today. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM.
