This PhD thesis was accepted at the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz in August 2006. The author, who now works at the Department of Economics (Public Finance Division) of the Deutsche Bundesbank, evaluates the possible employment effects of proposed employment protection legislation. He briefly describes employment protection legislation, then provides an overview of the literature on employment protection in search and matching models. He analyzes the effects of 'experience rating,' discusses the implications of severance payments and judicial mistakes, and describes the effects of employment protection on the incentive for ex-ante skill formation. A mathematic appendix is included. There is no subject index.
