Based on the IEEE 802.16 (WirelessMAN), WiMAX, or the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in ways ranging from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. In this three-volume reference handbook, Ahson (a senior staff software engineer with Motorola, Inc.) and Ilyas (engineering and computer science, Florida Atlantic U.) present 32 chapters providing technical information about WiMAX from basic concepts to research on future directions. The volumes are thematically organized. One is devoted to technologies, performance analysis, and quality-of-service and includes coverage of design of baseband processors, fractal-based methodologies for antenna synthesis, space-time coding and applications, system performance analysis for the mesh mode of IEEE 802.16, performance analysis and simulation results under mobile environments, scheduling algorithms with QoS restraints, and resource allocation and admission control using fuzzy logic. Another looks at applications and includes discussion of voice-over-IP, WiMAX technology for home access, WiMAX over global mobile for African rural areas, and connectivity and load distribution in WiMAX-based multihop backhaul networks. A final volume deals with standards and security and includes discussion of competing and complementary standards to WiMAX, scheduling and performance analysis of quality-of-service, propagation and performance, mobility support, measured signal-aware mechanism for fast handover in WiMAX networks, mesh networking, WiMAX testing, security overview, and privacy key management.
