Written at the University of Hamburg, this law dissertation reviews the historical role of the principle of good faith in marine insurance contracts, demonstrates good faith in the German and French versions of marine law, and examines the principle of utmost good faith in English marine insurance law. The concluding chapter suggests that although the concept of utmost good faith in English marine insurance law initially was not much more than a signifier of a particular kind of contract to which the duty of disclosure applied, there is a continuing process in English law to redefine utmost good faith.
