An international group of scholars in geography and urban development examines the recent rapid growth of cities under the new "market socialism" in China. The cities of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dongguan and Kunshan are studied individually along with areas of burgeoning industrial growth. The major considerations are the problem of providing a workable infrastructure to support the huge number of people moving from rural to urban areas to work and to provide areas within the cities for entrepreneurial activity. The authors concluded that these are serious but not insurmountable if the government of China includes these considerations in their drive to become an economic power.
