Sloboda (Pennsylvania State U.-York) seeks reasons for the success of autobiographies by the expatriate American authors Wharton (1862- 1937) and Stein (1874-1946), published respectively in 1934 and 1933. He finds similarities in their life stories that will surprise people who know only how their careers diverged--Wharton's novels and short stories extending the tradition of realism while Stein challenged that tradition and advocated alternative forms of expression.
