The author of 17 nonfiction books, numerous encyclopedia contributions, and many periodical articles, Wepman presents a resource text for students and general readers describing American immigration in the words of those who experienced it and those who reacted to it, including religious, political, and business leaders, and social workers. The material is organized into 11 chronological periods, from the 17th to the 21st century. Each chapter includes an essay on immigration during that period, a chronology of events, and excerpts from speeches, journals, correspondence, and book passages. Four appendices contain principal documents relating to American immigration, brief biographies of key figures, maps of major immigration routes and main areas of settlement, and statistical tables and graphs. Originally published in 2002 as a volume in the Eyewitness History Series, the text has been updated with materials published in the past five years.
