Wasson was an important figure in the second wave of transcendentalists after Emerson, explains Peden (emeritus philosophy, Augusta State U.), though his poor health prevented him from reading or writing as much as some of his better remembered contemporaries, and limited his influence and participation as a Unitarian minister. He helped plan the Free Religious Association as an alternative for liberal religious thinkers to Unitarianism, but drew back from the scientific orientation of other leaders in the effort.
