This is a paperbound reprint of the 2005 edition. Unlike some qualitative researchers, Silverman (emeritus, sociology, Goldsmiths College, UK) is not opposed to also using quantitative measures when appropriate, so he first addresses what can and cannot be done with qualitative methods. In this update of the 2005 paperback edition of a text first published in 2000, he introduces six new chapters and updated material covering all phases of effective qualitative research--from selecting a topic and methodology to getting published and finding a job--by arguing that qualitative research should always be theoretically- rather than recipe-driven. Features include examples of research diaries, a contributed chapter on computer analysis specific to such data, further reading, and a glossary.
