In a volume derived from lectures handouts produced when he taught the Tractatus in an undergraduate course at an unspecified institution, Morris introduces this work of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) as one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. To make this brief but cryptic work accessible, he introduces and analyzes Wittgenstein's life, background to the Tractatus, its themes (e.g., sentences as models), and the continuing importance of Wittgenstein's work to studies of logic, the philosophy of mind, language, mathematics, and metaphysics. The volume includes an appendix on the 'substance argument,' and an index of passages in the Tractus as well as a general subject index.
