The Internet offers stigmatized/marginalized groups opportunities to challenge what has been called "the existing political hierarchy's monopoly" on power. Still (English/technical communication and rhetoric, Texas Tech U.) treats the intersex movement as a case study of virtual activism. In historical context, he presents a first-ever rhetorical analysis of how intersexed persons (formerly known as hermaphrodites) are using this technology to create an alternative rhetoric to medical and cultural representations of them as abnormal, via bonding, dissemination, and confronting. He discusses (and shows home pages) from such sites as Organisation Intersex International and Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome Support Group. Issues include the debate over open vs. membership-only access in these online communities.
