In this first of two volumes on Thomas A. Holland's archaeological rescue expedition in northern Syria, Wilkinson (archaeology of the Near East, U. of Edinburgh) presents a comprehensive look at the study itself, rather than at the excavated finds. The book begins with an introduction to the study and a review of earlier surveys, and is organized into sections addressing the physical environment, land use and the agricultural economy, the archaeological landscape, the ceramic sequence from surveyed sites, the evolution of the settlement patterns, biological remains of the ancient agricultural economy, and the site in its regional context. Appendices include a survey site catalog, the site gazetteer, selected soil & sediment descriptions, and an index of geographical names. Distributed by the David Brown Book Co.
