In the US, says Toke (politics and sociology, U. of Binghamton, England) consumers have swallowed genetically modified food with barely a flinch, but in Europe, including Britain, people are so persistently and vocally opposed to it that the US government is suing them for stubbornness. He sets out to explain why two regions so similar in technological and economic development and in the understanding of science diverge so widely on the issue. Using a social constructionist discourse analysis approach, he investigates how science and politics interact, and the politics of interest group pressure that has been associated with the divergent political outcomes.
