The 13 chapters in this volume were originally prepared for a 2002 International Forestry Research symposium held in Kyoto, Japan. The contributors (experts in forestry, agricultural science, and environmental anthropology) examine the effects of migrating populations on the ecology of tropical forests through explanations of area-specific studies in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Specifically, they discuss the conditions that compel and result from migration in the pan-Amazon basin, central Vietnam, southwestern Ghana, and the peat swamp forests of Sumatra, among other locations. The editors are all associated with the Japan Center for Area Studies, the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka. This book is distributed in the U.S. by ISBS.
