Chemist, inventor, and industrialist Emanuel Goldberg (1881-1970), although now largely forgotten was in fact one of the most significant figures in the history of information sciences, argues Buckland (emeritus, information management and systems, U. of California at Berkeley). He profiles Goldberg's life and career and lays out the case that it was Goldberg who created the first desktop engine, designed the Contax 34mm camera, and developed microdot technology, among other achievements. In addition to attempting to rescue Goldberg's reputation from obscurity, Buckland seeks to analyze the reasons for the obscurity in the first place.
