For students and practitioners, Purnell and Paulanka (health sciences, U. of Delaware) compile discussions of 19 cultures from around the world (African American, Amish, Chinese, Filipino, Iranian, and Mexican, for example) and their relationship to health care, using a 12-step model (the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence). It explores their inhabited locality, topography, communication, family roles and organization, workforce issues, biocultural ecology (such as disease and health conditions), high- risk behaviors, nutrition, pregnancy and childbearing practices, death rituals, spirituality, and information about health care practices and practitioners. This edition contains shorter vignettes in each chapter instead of the larger case studies, and three new chapters on Guatemalan, Russian, and Thai heritage. There is an expanded focus on evidence-based practice, and 11 additional chapters online, with their abstracts at the end of the book. It also has more extensive sections on disparities and organizational cultural competence, and a section on evidence-based practice. The description of the model includes application of the concepts of culture to the dominant American society in a cross-cultural way. Contributors work in a variety of health care fields, as well as foreign languages and linguistics, graphic design and language arts, and health law, around the world.
